Hoyas are an ever popular tropical indoor plant often called “Wax plant” due to its thick waxy leaves. These stunning trailing plants are a classic because they live forever, grows to be enormous, and creates beautiful, porcelain-like fragrant flowers.
Hoyas are generally a pretty easy care plant, and comes in many amazing and varying varieties. Flowers bloom when the plant reaches maturity, which can be a little hard to pinpoint, but generally when the plant has grown to completely fill the pot it is in.
Hoyas also don't mind being root bound, which is when the root system completely fills the container it is in. this means it will survive and thrive in the same pot for years without needing re-potting!
Some of the stunning varieties you can expect to see are:
- Hoya Australis
- Hoya carnosa
- Hoya Serpens
- Hoya Litoralis
- Hoya Odetteae
- Hoya Australis
- Hoya Bella
- Hoya Obscura

With almost all hoyas, we recommend bright filtered light. Most can handle some medium light positions, but only truly thrives in bright light.
Keep out of direct sun, as this can be too harsh for their foliage. Also keep away from dark and drafty positions.
Remember, Hoya is a tropical plant and therefore ideally likes tropical environments such as warmth and a little humidity.
With all Hoya plants, ensure the soil has dried before re-watering. This is typically when the kokedama feels dry to the touch and is light when held.
In warmer months, this would generally be weekly, to every one and a half weeks.
In the cooler months, generally every 2-3 weeks.
With all Hoyas, be careful not to over water.
HOW TO WATER
Fully submerge your kokedama in a bowl, sink or bucket. You may need to hold it under for a moment! Allow to soak for 10-15 minutes until kokedama feels heavy and full.
Alternatively, you can gently water from the top as you would a normal pot plant. Simply part any lower foliage to expose some soil and gently water. This method will also ensure the moss and twine wrap is prolonged.
It is important to gently squeeze out excess water from the kokedama by pressing between two hands, on the sides towards the base. This will ensure your kokedama does not stay waterlogged which will prevent conditions such as root rot, fungus gnats and mould. As the moss and twine are natural products they are biodegradable and as such, squeezing out the excess water will prevent deterioration, prolonging the life of your kokedama.
